Google to launch modular smartphone prototype 'within weeks'
Cellcom
|
Google's Project Ara will see the creation of a smartphone with swappable components
Google may have sold Motorola to Lenovo, but it is pushing ahead with Project Ara -- an initiative to create modular smartphones that can be built up from detachable components -- with a functioning prototype expected to be ready "within weeks".
Motorola first announced Project Ara in October 2013. The idea is to create a modular smartphone that allows users to replace components over time, instead of replacing the entire handset. This means it can be easily customised for each consumer's needs, and will also be more eco-friendly that traditional smartphones.
"We want to do for hardware what the Android platform has done for software," said Paul Eremenko of the Motorola Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group at the time.
"Our goal is to drive a more thoughtful, expressive, and open relationship between users, developers, and their phones. To give you the power to decide what your phone does, how it looks, where and what it’s made of, how much it costs, and how long you’ll keep it."
When Google sold Motorola, it decided to hold onto the ATAP group, which has fallen under Google's Android umbrella. In an interview withTime magazine, Eremenko said that ATAP is now finishing up work on a functioning prototype, which will be ready within weeks, with a version ready for commercial release in the first quarter of 2015.
The design for Project Ara is based on the concept of Phonebloks, created by Dutch designer Dave Hakkens. It consists of a structural frame known as an endoskeleton and modules that slide into place. A module can be anything, from an application processor to a display or keyboard, an extra battery, or a pulse oximeter.
Google plans to get the cost of the endoskeleton -- which it is calling the “grayphone” -- down to $50. Eremenko said it will be sold at convenience stores and will come pre-loaded with an app that will let buyers begin the process of customising the phone with additional modules and aesthetic modifications.
There will be three sizes of endoskeleton: mini (rather basic), medium (mainstream) and jumbo (an oversized, phablet-style variant). They will include an aluminum frame, networking circuitry and a back-up battery. Each endoskeleton will have several module connectors -- for example, the medium frame will have room for 10 connectors.
Google has partnered with NK Labs to do the electrical, mechanical, and software engineering and with 3D Systems to make a high-speed 3D printer to mass produce the Project Ara endoskeletons.
"We want not just to create something that's custom, and not even just something that's unique, but actually something that's expressive so that people can use this as a canvas to tell a story," Eremenko said. "So that you can set your phone down at dinner on the table next to you, and it becomes a topic of conversation for the first fifteen minutes of dinner."

The new smartphone was announced by Blackberry CEO and Executive Chairman John Chen at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Mr Chen said the Q20 will have a traditional Blackberry layout and is aimed at the company's core business and government customers.
He said: "Almost everyone I’ve met, in government, enterprise, loves the keyboard, but it turns out what they love just as much is the little belt above the keyboard that held the trackpad and buttons.
"So we decided to listen to customers, and give them what they want."
Mr Chen said the Q20 will harken back to the iconic Blackberry Bold line of smartphones which were were launched in 2008.
The last of this range were released in November 2011.
Mr Chen also announced the Z3 smartphone which has a 5 inch touchscreen and which will go on sale in Indonesia in April for "less than $200".
The low-cost device will be rolled out to other emerging markets however it is not clear if it will be released in the UK.
Blackberry released their first smartphone the BlackBerry 957 in 2000 which was the first to have a QWERTY keyboard.
They were one of the leading smartphone manufacturers but have struggled since the emergence of the Apple iPhone and Android devices.
Last year Blackberry announced the Q10 smartphone which also has a full QWERTY keyboard and came after a long line of solely touch screen devices.

One Solid Reason to Wait for iPhone 6 Release Date and Skip Galaxy S5 – Quantum Dot Display Technology
Cellcom
|
The iPhone 6 release date is worth waiting for despite the Galaxy S5 arrival this MWC 2014 week and one killer feature that should elicit awes and jaw-drops is the handset's Quantum Dot (QD) display technology, reports say
In line with Apple's tradition of introducing innovations with each iPhone model, there has to be something new that the iPhone 6 will bring to the table, Forbes said in a report. It is not only about the larger screen profile but more on the display technology to come with the device, the publication added.
Retina panel was ushered in with the iPhone 4 and for the next iPhone, QD display will head the pack of fresh iOS features that will distinguish the Apple device from the bunch of Android and Windows flagships to hit the market this 2014.
That the iPhone will be the first QD smartphone is almost a certainty, Forbes declared, pointing to display tech specialist Nanosys as source. The company appears ready to mass produce QD display panels that can be used on televisions and mobile devices.
Nanosys is highly confident that QD panels for smartphones are all prepped for volume distribution in the second half of 2014, which is a schedule that is fully aligned with the projected iPhone 6 release date - likely in September of the year, at the earliest.
Forbes also believes that Apple engineers are hard at work on developing QD-laced screens for the iPhone 5S replacement since last year as implied in the number of related patents that was leaked out at around the same time.
The publication also noted that by December 2014, stories of QD display becoming part of the iPhone supply chain started swirling, giving more credence to the speculations.
But what really is so exciting about an iPhone 6 that beams out screen rendering in QD tech?
For one, according to BGR, the iPhone visual experience will move a notch higher or far more significant improvement than previously seen in Retina-boasting iPhones.
Apple is set to differentiate its take on QD technology from the one used in Amazon's Kindle Fire HDX, said the same report. The end-goal is to eliminate all the compromises that came with the Amazon tablet, which suits well with Apple CEO Tim Cook's emphasis on near-perfect technology.
With QD display on-board, the iPhone 6 is able to deliver accurate colour rendition, which is a capability that could be extended to the 2014 iPad Air and iPad Mini refreshes, and more.
BGR spelled out the following general benefits that end-users will get when buying the iPhone 6 with QD screen in tow:
- More efficient battery use
- Device longevity
- And the likely pairing of QD display with a bendable or flexible screen.
Plus one thing is definitely sure, QD display will be the banner killer feature that the Retina panel was a few years ago with the iPhone 4 and this offering is likely to grace the iPhone 6 release date, which should come in the latter part of Q3 2014.

Samsung Galaxy S5 vs. iPhone 6: Which Bezel-free Design is Better?
Cellcom
|
The Mobile World Congress will feature some of the most interesting releases for this year. One of the most anticipated is the Samsung Galaxy S5. As Samsung proceeds with its flagship release, all eyes are on Apple as well. The tech giant will reportedly release the iPhone 6 later this year. According to recent information, the rivalry between the two continues as leaks and reports suggest that the Galaxy S5 and the iPhone 6 will sport a similar bezel-free design. Which smartphone is better?
Apple and Samsung are considered the twin titans of the tech industry especially smartphones. As the rivalry continues, it appears the two companies will be trying out a similar feature on their flagship phones. According to recent reports, both the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the iPhone 6 will be sporting a bezel-free display.
The Korea Herald notes that the two companies may face another rivalry in terms of edge-to-edge and bezel-free displays. Samsung will go ahead of Apple at the Mobile World Congress. The report also noted that the Korean tech giant will be doing away with the hardware-based home button. Users can expect a whole new experience with the touch screen and wider display.
The idea behind Samsung's bezel-free design is the inclusion of a fingerprint scanner plus the use a of a new panel technology. Samsung wants a similar feature to Apple's Touch ID.
"The finger-scanning technology will be available on the bottom left and right sides, and not the entire display," Korea Herald quoted an industry source.
"Scanning fingerprints on the entire screen, which was much talked about recently, will be available in the latter half of this year as there are still technological hurdles to overcome," he added. Likewise, the bezel free design supports the use of a single panel layer instead of the usual four layers of ITO (indium tin oxide) films. This will allow the device to become more sensitive to touch controls.
Users can use the Galaxy S5 even with gloves on.
As for Apple's iPhone 6, the bezel-free design will allow the company to place the Touch ID on the actual display. Apple wants to make its Touch ID more accurate removing buttons from the screen. People will have to wait until both devices are on the market already to see which company did it better.

Nokia working on two high-end Android smartphones: Report

Nokia seems to be working on much more than what the rumours suggest regarding its budget Android smartphone. It is now being rumoured that besides the Nokia X (also known as Nokia Normandy), the Finnish firm might also be working on two more Android smartphones.
The two rumoured Nokia handsets are said to include more high-end specifications than what is rumoured for the Nokia X. While the purported Nokia XX will come with better specifications than its single X version, the third handset, which is yet to be allotted a name, is speculated to fall under the firm's flagship line-up with high-end specifications.
Reports from tech.qq.com also mention that these two rumoured Android-based handsets by Nokia would not see the light of day at the MWC 2014 event. This further indicates that Nokia X might only be a mere experiment by the firm to study the market' response for the smartphone, based on which the other two handsets will take shape.
Talking about the Nokia X, it has been understood that the handset is tipped to have entered mass production at a Komarom plant in Hungary.
A Hungarian site claims that the Nokia X entered mass production in the company's Komarom plant a few weeks ago, a plant that notably saw reduction in its workforce as a part of job cuts that the Finnish company announced back in 2012.
The site also suggests that the Komarom plant is manufacturing the Nokia X, previously dubbed Nokia Normandy in multiple colours. Further, the site claims that Nokia X will not feature any Google Services or even support the Play Store, which is very much in-line with earlier reports.

Google announces Project Tango, a smartphone that can map the world around it

Google has built a prototype Android smartphone that can learn and map the world around it. The device comes from a new initiative called Project Tango, and it's ready to get the phone into developers' hands to see what the technology is capable of. Google says that the phone will learn the dimension of rooms and spaces just by being moved around inside of them — walking around your bedroom, for example, would help the phone learn the shape of your home. The hope is that by creating a robust map of the world, Google's phone could eventually give precise directions to any given point that needs to be reached.
It's an ambitious project, but that should be no surprise given who it's coming from: Tango comes out of the Advanced Technology and Projects group — one of the few pieces of Motorola that Google has opted to hang on to rather than sell. "The goal of Project Tango is to give mobile devices a human-scale understanding of space and motion," says Johnny Lee, leader of Project Tango. Google has 200 devices that it's preparing to give out to developers who want to build mapping tools, games, and new algorithms that take advantage of the phone's sensors, and it expects to send them all out by March 14th.
The Tango devices work by using a motion tracking camera and a depth sensor built into their backsides. While being moved around, the sensors will detect their orientation and what's in front of them, using that data to build out a 3D map of their surroundings. While the basic goal is to create detailed indoor maps, Google's distribution of developer devices speaks to the other possibilities it sees coming out of this type of data: it suggests that Tango could be used to create more realistic augmented reality games or to assist the visually impaired when they're navigating an unfamiliar area.
Google stresses that the technology is still in early stages, but it still sees it as on the way to reaching millions of people down the road. And now, the Advanced Technology and Projects group will have plenty of time and resources to make that happen. Alongside the announcement of Tango, Android chief Sundar Pichai extended a welcome to the team, suggesting that they've now fully fallen underneath Google. The group is also responsible for Project Ara, which hopes to build modular smartphones.
Project Tango appears to be a natural fit for Lee's leadership. Lee's name may be familiar from his work creating virtual reality tools out of a Wii remote while at Carnegie Mellon, and later for helping Microsoft develop the Kinect. He joined Google in 2011, and clearly he's still been working on equally ambitious motion-tracking projects since then. Google says it did not create Tango all on its own, however, but with assistance from various universities and research institutions as well. The project has been in the works at the Advanced Technologies group for the past year.

More Apple iPhone 6 Images and Specs Leaked: What Will the Next iPhone Look Like?
Cellcom
|
The market has been curious for some time now about Apple’s iPhone 6. Reports and rumours about the specs of the device have been surfacing non-stop. More interesting are the set of leaked photos that came up. Reports claim Apple’s iPhone 6 will feature two display sizes: 4.7 and 5.5 inches. Unlike the glass or plastic cutouts previously associated with the upcoming device, it seems the next Apple smartphone will have an aluminium body. What will the next iPhone look like?
Samsung will be announcing the Samsung Galaxy S5 this Feb 24. This means all eyes are also on its biggest competitor, Apple. According to reports, Apple will be announcing the iPhone 6 around June or September. Despite a few months more into the timeline, reports and rumours about the device have spread.
The most interesting of these reports is Apple's plan on offering two iPhone 6 variants: one smartphone and one phablet. As mentioned, these will have 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays. Apple device leaker Sonny Dickson has something to add to these reports. Likewise,MacRumors have also posted more leaked photos of the device.
According to the leaked images, the featured device is the prototype of the iPhone 6. The photos were reportedly shared with the site by an anonymous Twitteruser. There are no confirmations whether the photos really feature the iPhone 6, but leaks have proven useful previously. Dickson posted the photos on his Twitteraccount with the label "teasers." He did not offer other details about the photos.
For the leaked photos, click here.
An update posted on BGR says that a Reddit user presented convincing arguments about the photos. The user claimed that the photos do not feature the iPhone 6. They are renders from a graphic designer back in late 2013. Other reported details about the device include a sapphire screen, Sony FaceTime camera module and thinner design.
There are no further details about the specs. Apple will have to provide an announcement yet for the actual release of the device. Analysts believe the company will be pushing standards for the next iPhone 6. The company has been investing in interesting patents like solar panels and wireless charging.

Nokia seems to be leaving no stone unturned in an attempt to promote the expected launch of its first Android phone. The Finnish giant has now released teaser images ahead of the much-anticipated Nokia X (aka Normandy) launch.
Notably, the Nokia X teaser images do not reveal much about the upcoming device, but it explicitly shows an 'X' mark in a couple of the images. The images have been posted on Nokia's Weibo site, which is the equivalent of Twitter in China. The first teaser image shows two monkeys: one standing below a tree and another on the tree.
We expect that the Finnish giant is indicating that there might be two devices unveiled at the MWC event scheduled for 24 February. At this point of time, we only know about the long-rumoured Nokia X, earlier known as Nokia Normandy which has been in news since last year, though there are more than a few Windows Phone offerings also supposedly due at the event.
The second Nokia X teaser image shows a tree with its DNA-shaped helix roots visible, clearly depicting an 'X' mark. The third teaser image shows a pirate treasure map with green-coloured 'X' mark is formed by negative spaces between the arrows pointing inwards.
Nokia also started a countdown page for the MWC event on its official Conversations blog, with a clear 'X' marked, similar to that seen on the teaser map image.
On Monday, Nokia X's alleged press image was leaked, which further cemented the authenticity of the name. The purported press images were leaked via the phone tipster, @evleaks. The post, with an image of a green-colour variant of the handset, seemingly confirmed the name as Nokia X amidst a number of rumours crowding around the device for weeks.
The Nokia X, besides being said to fall between the Asha and Lumia line-up, is said to feature a 4-inch TFT display with a resolution of 480x854 (FWVGA) pixels; a 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon 200 processor; 5-megapixel rear camera; microSD card support and Android 4.4 KitKat. The device was recently spotted under a listing page on a Vietnamese online retailer website.
The Nokia X handset was previously said to sport a 5-megapixel rear camera, however the CamSpeed benchmark hinted that the handset would arrive with a lower 3-megapixel camera.
