Telecom service provider Bharti Airtel has joined hands with handset maker Nokia to provide new Nokia X smartphone across 17 countries in Africa from mid-April this year, a company statement said on Thursday.
Bharti Airtel has operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa.
"This is yet another first from Airtel and Nokia. As Africa's largest Internet provider, we are excited that Airtel customers in 17 countries will be amongst the first in the world to enjoy a unique combination of Nokia's stunning design and user experience integrated with a wide range of services.
"In addition, Nokia X will come with data bundles for our customers to access their favourite social sites and chat applications," Andre Beyers, Airtel Africa's chief marketing officer, said.
"Consumers can enjoy their favourite apps and the most popular Microsoft Internet and cloudservices, wrapped-up on a smartphone that holds-on the Nokia promise," said Timo Toikkanen, executive vice president, mobile phones, Nokia.
On Wednesday, seven major telecom operators across Africa and Middle East, including Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Group, announced they will share their network infrastructure, with the objective of providing Internet to rural communities and driving down the cost of mobile services.
The seven operators include Bharti Airtel, Etisalat Group, MTN Group, Ooredoo Group, Orange, Vodafone Group and Zain Group.
The participating operators have made this commitment to providing Internet and mobile broadband access to unserved rural communities and driving down the cost of mobile services for all sections of the population.
The operators collectively manage 76 mobile network operations across 47 countries in Africa and the Middle East, where many of the unconnected population live in rural areas, it said.

6 Ways to Extend Your iPhone Battery Life After Updating to iOS 7.1

No one likes a dead iPhone. If you recently updated yours to iOS 7.1, you know how much of a drain Apple’s latest mobile update is on its battery life -- and on your patience.
Don’t despair. We’ve got you covered with these six quick and easy iPhone battery boosting tips and tricks. You’ll be back up and running in no time (hopefully not into people and walls and stuff while walking and texting).
1. Trim the fat: shut down all unnecessary apps. If you’re done posting selfies on Instagram, close it. While you’re at it, shut down your email, Safari, Facebook, Twitter, or anything else that’s open and doesn’t need to be. Apps left open continuously leech power from your battery continuously. No bueno.
To shut down open apps, double-click your iPhone’s Home Button and swipe up on each one to close it. Boom. Done.
2. Let the Wi-Fi rip. Enabling Wi-Fi helps your iPhone gobble up less power when you're doing something on it that needs to access data. To enable Wi-Fi, go to Settings, choose Wi-Fi and log into a Wi-Fi network. Good to go.
3. Chill on the screen brightness. Turning on the Auto-Brightness feature stretches your battery life by allowing the screen to adjust according to the current lighting conditions. You can also simply manually dim your screen.
To enable Auto-Brightness, go to Settings, choose Brightness & Wallpaper and set the Auto-Brightness to On.
To dim your screen brightness manually, go to Settings, choose Brightness & Wallpaper and drag the slider to the left, kind of like rejecting a match on Tinder, but way less cool.
4. Ditch push notifications from apps. They mostly annoy you anyway, right? No one wants LinkedIn push notifying them every time a hiring manager wants to connect or a Facebook pop-up informing them that their ninth grade geometry teacher just commented on their status. Actually, we love most app push notifications (especially the retweet kind from Twitter), but, alas, they are big-time battery life suckers.
To turn them off, go to Settings, choose Notifications, then select the apps you want to disable and tweak your notification settings for each.
Pick from the following:
-- Change Alert Style to None.
-- Turn Badge App Icon off.
-- Turn Sounds off.
New notifications will be received when you open your push-happy apps again.
5. Fly in Airplane Mode in places with low and no cell coverage. Your iPhone blows a lot of battery juice trying to keep a connection to the local cellular network, which could suck up more power in low- and no-coverage areas. To combat this problem and boost your battery power, switch to Airplane Mode by going into Settings and selecting it. We don’t suggest trying this trick if you’re expecting an important call; Airplane Mode doesn’t let you make or receive calls.
6. Give location services the shaft. Apps that love location services, like Google Maps, Siri, Flipboard, to name a few, are notorious battery life slayers. To see which apps have recently used location services, go to your iPhone Settings, select Privacy and choose Location Services. From here you can turn off location services for individual apps.
To disable Location Services altogether, go to Settings, choose Privacy, select Location Services and simply switch the feature off. You are now off the grid. Well, mostly.

iPhone 6 Release Date: iPhone 5C Price Brought Down for New Flagship Smartphone's Early Launch?

Apple Inc. has not revealed the release date of iPhone 6 but the announcement of an 8GB version of its so-called low-cost iPhone 5C at an even lower price has sparked off speculations that the company is planning an early launch of its upcoming flagship smartphone.
There are conflicting reports on the release date of the new device, with some arguing that it would be unveiled at the WWDC event in June, while others say it would see the light of the day only in September.
Apple Inc. has brought down the price of its 'not so popular' smartphone iPhone 5C, by announcing an 8GB version of the device, priced £429. The device is available on O2 website priced at £28 a month with a £49.99 payment upfront, according to The Inquirer. EE also told the website it will be available for £99 on an £18.99 per month 4G plan.
The low-storage version was announced on Monday, probably to counter the poor sales of the smartphone.
More than three million iPhone 5C units - two millions in Pegatron's warehouses and one million with the carriers and retailers - have remained unsold, according to a report by iDigitalTimes.
Several reports had claimed that iPhone 5S made good business but the low cost iPhone 5C was a flop. So it looks like Apple has brought down the price of the device with a low-storage variant, in order to boost its sales ahead of the launch of its new flagship smartphone.
It may be recalled that several reports had surfaced a few days ago, claiming that Walmart had cut the price of the 16 GB iPhone 5S and 5C. The 16 GB iPhone 5S price has been dropped from $145 to $119, while the 5C is down from $45 to $29 for customers willing to sign two-year contracts with AT&T and Verizon, according to CNN Money.
Phone 6 is expected to sport a 4.7/4.8' or 5.5' display with a 1920x1080p (440ppi), or a 2272×1280 (510ppi), powered by the A8 chip (64-bit) and run on iOS 7.2, according to South Korean brokerage KDB Daewoo Securities. Several reports claimed that the new flagship smartphone will have a scratch-free sapphire crystal glass screen.
