Apple and Android fans on reddit join forces to boycott CurrentC

In a shocking turn of events, Apple and Android fans on reddit have joined forces to collectively boycott the unethical blocking of NFC payment system by certain retailers, which affects both Apple Pay and Google Wallet users.
If you're not aware, some of the retailers in the US have started disabling their NFC systems in their stores to prevent people from using Apple Pay or any other NFC based payment system. The reason for this is that these retailers are part of an organization called Merchant Customer Exchange, or MCX, which has its own payment system Called CurrentC.
Instead of a secure, wireless system, CurrentC requires users to download an app and fill in their debit card information in that. Then every time you have to purchase something you have to scan a QR code with the app, and then pay for it. The app is also used to shove promotional content and coupons to users, which they may or may not want.
Other than being inconvenient and annoying, CurrentC is nowhere as secure as either Apple Pay or Google Wallet. But having an alternate payment system is one thing. Blocking out competitive services entirely so that users have to either pay cash, card, or use CurrentC is another, entirely unethical and anti-competitive business strategy.
While the law would eventually come into the picture, people are now starting to boycott this practice. /r/Apple and /r/Android are fairly popular subreddits and if the two can actually come together and manage to get this done it will for the good of everyone.

Following in the footsteps of the LG G Watch and the Moto 360, the Samsung Gear Live is now in the process of receiving an update to the latest version of Android Wear.

This is the same build that has rolled out to the other aforementioned smartwatches a few days ago. After applying the update, you’ll be on Android Wear 4.4W.2, build number KNX01Q.
The new software brings with it support for playing music locally from the watch by pairing Bluetooth audio accessories to it. You also get the option of hiding the notification cards from the watch face.
Apparently there’s no way for you to manually force the update to come through, and as this is a staged over-the-air rollout you might still be waiting a few days to get it.

Apple Inc has posted a new security warning for users of its iCloud online storage service amid reports of a concerted effort to steal passwords and other data from people who use the popular service in China - company does say its iPhones, iPads and Macs are safe.
''We're aware of intermittent organized network attacks using insecure certificates to obtain user information, and we take this very seriously,'' the computer-maker said in a post Tuesday on its support website. The post said Apple's own servers have not been compromised.
Apple's post did not mention China or provide any details on the attacks. But several news outlets reported Tuesday that some Chinese Internet users have begun seeing warnings that indicate they had been diverted to an unauthorized website when they attempted to sign into their iCloud accounts.
That kind of diversion, known to computer security experts as a ''man in the middle'' attack, could allow a third party to copy and steal the passwords that users enter when they think they are signing into Apple's service. Hackers could then use the passwords to collect other data from the users' accounts.
Chinese activists blamed the attacks on that country's government, according to news reports and the Chinese activist website GreatFire.org, which suggested the campaign was spurred by the fact that Apple recently began selling its newest iPhone models, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, in China. The new smartphones have software with enhanced encryption features to protect Apple users' data.
Apple, which is based in Cupertino, California, said in its post that the attacks have not affected users who sign into iCloud from their iPhones or iPads, or on Mac computers while using the latest Mac operating system and Apple's Safari browser. But the company suggested users should verify they are connecting to a legitimate iCloud server by using the security features built into Safari and other browsers such as Firefox and Google's Chrome. The browsers will show a message that warns users when they are connecting to a site that doesn't have a digital certificate verifying that it is authentic.
''If users get an invalid certificate warning in their browser while visiting www.icloud.com , they should pay attention to the warning and not proceed,'' Apple said in the post. The attacks appear unrelated to an episode last month in which hackers stole nude photos from the iCloud accounts of several US celebrities

Moto X, G, E and DROID to get Android 5.0 OS Lollipop OS update before the winter holidays


With Google announcing the Android 5.0 Lollipoplast Wednesday, this new OS update is expected to be featured in a wide range of Android devices.
Motorola has already come up with a list of phones that have been currently set to obtain the Android 5.0 Lollipop update.
At present, the Android 5.0 Lollipop has been slotted to be made available for the Moto X, Moto X (2014), Moto G, Moto G (2014), Moto G with 4G LTE, Moto E, Motorola DROID Ultra, Motorola DROID Maxx and Motorola DROID Mini.
According to Motorola, the company has not settled on a final date as to when the OS update will be rolling out to such devices, but it has been rumored that unlocked handsets may obtain the Android 5.0 Lollipop update sooner than expected.
Speculations are also pointing to a possible update for the Moto X, G, E and DROID devices this November or December.
Motorola has promised to release details about the other devices after they have coordinated with their "various partners," including mobile carriers that are supporting such phones, and have figured out the process for update distribution.
The company also made the official announcement that they have collaborated with Google to come up with the new Moto Nexus 6, known to be the first smartphone that will be made available with the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop.
Additionally, the new Moto DROID Turbo will be announced and be made available by Verizon Wireless.  It is expected to run on Android 4.4.4 KitKat and is likely to be added to Motorola's official list of phones ready for the Android 5.0 Lollipop update.
The Android 5.0 SDK will reportedly be made available starting today, Oct. 17, and the first device that will be installed with it is Google's Nexus 9 when released this coming Nov. 3.

I think that at some point in the future, smart phones will have a built in infrared camera. But for now, you are going to have to use an IR camera add on. This is the Seek Thermal infrared camera. What do I think about it? Let’s find out.

An Infrared Review

But what does an IR camera do? What can you use it for? Here is a more detailed overview of the physics of infrared light, but I will give you the short version.
  • Solid objects produce electromagnetic radiation. We like to call this stuff “light” (not to be confused with visible light).
  • When objects increase in temperature, two things happen. First, they produce more light. Second, the wavelength of light gets shorter. Note that they don’t just produce one wavelength, but in general the hotter the object the shorter the wavelength.
  • If you look at the wavelength of light (technically, the wavelength of the highest intensity light), you can get an estimate for the temperature of that object.
The best example is your stove element. Before you turn it on, it is room temperature and produces light. Just about all of this light from the element has a wavelength that is much too large for your human eyes to detect. Instead, you see the element because light reflects off the surface and enters your eye. If you turn on the element, it starts to get hot. Eventually, it will get so hot that you can see the light emitted since the wavelength is short enough to be in the visible spectrum.
So the infrared camera take the light that you can’t see and displays a false color image where different colors correspond to different temperatures (mostly).

Microsoft Research may have a solution for text input on small smartwatch screens, and it’s using Google’s Android Wear platform to test it out.
The company has developed an “Analog Keyboard” app for Android Wear, letting users string words together by drawing each letter on the screen. If you’ve enabled ADB for sideloading apps—that is, the same trick that lets you run Windows 95 on a smartwatch—you can download and install the keyboard from Microsoft’s Website.
Microsoft says its solution offers a few advantages over other potential text-input methods: Unlike a software keyboard, handwriting doesn’t require ultra-fine motor skills, and it even lets users write without looking at the screen. And compared to speech-to-text, handwriting is more discreet and less prone to background noise.
However, the current app has some limitations due to the computational load required. It currently can’t tell uppercase letters from lowercase ones, and it runs into problems with responsiveness. It also tends to be a battery hog. In the future, Microsoft hopes it can alleviate these issues by offloading some computation to a paired smartphone or to the cloud.
Why this matters: Even with Microsoft’s approach, the idea of writing an entire text message on a smartwatch seems kind of nightmarish. Still, the keyboard could be useful as an editing tool, letting users clean up any words that speech-to-text gets wrong. While there are no plans to release the keyboard as a finished product, with enough polish it might be a good fit for Microsoft’s existing OneNote Android Wear app.

The HTC One M8 is one of the best Android smartphones on the market right now, with the LG G3 and the Samsung Galaxy S5 as its main competitors.
According to a report from the Inquisitr, the HTC One M8 competes with the new iPhone 6 and the popular Nokia Lumia 1520 for the best overall smartphone for the holiday season.
The HTC One (M8) is HTC’s flagship, and one of the best Android smartphones on the market. Improving on the popular HTC One (M7), HTC continues its brushed metal design and has introduced its unique Sense UI 6 on top of Android. The 5-inch 1080p display meets the market standard, but the camera is where the HTC One (M8) stands out. Dual 4MP cameras with the unique 2µm pixel size offers great low-light photos. UFocus allows users to modify the focus point of the photo even after the photo has already been taken. The HTC One M8 also packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801, one of the fastest processors on the market, making it a very speedy device.
Similarly, the LG G3 sports a 5.5-inch Quad HD resolution screen. The phone also uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 and has a 13MP camera. The speakers on the LG G3 are what set it apart: 1W speaker with 1.5W boost amp produces clear and loud sound. The HTC One M8 has front-facing speakers, still relatively new, but do not publish the specs of its speakers. The LG G3 also has a rear key for ambidextrous use. The button lays flat and is ergonomically designed for improved usability.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 comes in both dust and water resistant forms, making it the most durable of all three smartphones. The Samsung Galaxy S5 has a 5.1-inch Full HD display with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor and a 16MP camera. Sensors is where the Samsung Galaxy S5 excels, coming equipped with a fingerprint and a heart rate sensor for security and health. The Samsung Galaxy S5 also comes with a new ultra power saving mode for extreme cases where battery life is crucial.
All three devices come with microSD card slots that support up to 128GB. The minimum storage is 16GB for all three devices, but the LG G3 offers up to 3GB of RAM for those who need it while the HTC One M8 and the Samsung Galaxy S5 only offer 2GB. All three run on the newest Android operating system, Android 4.4.2 KitKat.
All three phones go for $199.99 with a contract. Without, the LG G3 goes for $460, the Samsung Galaxy S5 goes for $520, and the HTC One M8 goes for $555.

Android SMS worm Selfmite returns, more aggressive than ever

A new version of an Android worm called Selfmite has the potential to ramp up huge SMS charges for victims in its attempt to spread to as many devices as possible.
The first version of Selfmite was discovered in June, but its distribution was quickly disrupted by security researchers. The worm—a rare type of malware in the Android ecosystem—spread by sending text messages with links to a malicious APK (Android Package) to the first 20 entries in the address book of every victim.
The new version, found recently and dubbed Selfmite.b, has a similar, but much more aggressive spreading system, according to researchers from security firm AdaptiveMobile. It sends text messages with rogue links to all contacts in a victim’s address book, and does this in a loop.
“According to our data, Selfmite.b is responsible for sending over 150k messages during the past 10 days from a bit more than 100 infected devices,” Denis Maslennikov, a security analyst at AdaptiveMobile said in a blog post Wednesday. “To put this into perspective that is over a hundred times more traffic generated by Selfmite.b compared to Selfmite.a.”

Paying through the nose

At an average of 1,500 text messages sent per infected device, Selfmite.b can be very costly for users whose mobile plans don’t include unlimited SMS messages. Some mobile carriers might detect the abuse and block it, but this might leave the victim unable to send legitimate text messages.
Unlike Selfmite.a, which was found mainly on devices in North America, Selfmite.b has hit victims throughout at least 16 different countries: Canada, China, Costa Rica, Ghana, India, Iraq, Jamaica, Mexico, Morocco, Puerto Rico, Russia, Sudan, Syria, USA, Venezuela and Vietnam.
The first version of the worm used goo.gl shortened URLs in spam messages that pointed to an APK installer for the malware. Those URLs were hardcoded in the app’s code, so once they were disabled by Google, the operator of the goo.gl URL shortening service, Selfmite.a’s distribution stopped.
The worm’s authors took a different approach with the new version. They still use shortened URLs in text messages—this time generated with Go Daddy’s x.co service—but the URLs are specified in a configuration file that the worm downloads periodically from a third-party server.

Remote configuration

“We notified Go Daddy about the malicious x.co URLs and at the moment both shortened URLs have been deactivated,” Maslennikov said. “But the fact that the author(s) of the worm can change it remotely using a configuration file makes it harder to stop the whole infection process.”
The goal of Selfmite is to generate money for its creators through pay-per-install schemes by promoting various apps and services. The old version distributed Mobogenie, a legitimate application that allows users to synchronize their Android devices with their PCs and to download Android apps from an alternative app store.
Selfmite.b creates two icons on the device’s home screen, one to Mobogenie and one to an app called Mobo Market. However, they act as Web links and clicking on them can lead to different apps and online offers depending on the victim’s IP (Internet Protocol) address location.
Fortunately, the worm’s distribution system does not use exploits and relies only on social engineering—users would have to click on the spammed links and then manually install the downloaded APK in order for their devices to be infected. Furthermore, their devices would need to be configured to allow the installation of apps from unknown sources—anything other than Google Play—which is not the default setting in Android. This further limits the attack’s success rate.

If there’s one issue at the forefront of everyone’s mind in Silicon Valley at the moment, it’s privacy.
On the one hand, there’s the fallout from revelations made by US intelligence whistleblower Edward Snowden in The Guardian about widespread wiretapping and surveillance operations by the US National Security Agency (NSA).
There are growing concerns, both among the tech giants and investors, that widespread mass electronic surveillance programs such as Prism are damaging US companies’ relationships with consumers and their ability to win lucrative contracts abroad. There is also a growing anxiety amongst some consumers about their personal information being gathered either for advertising or intelligence purposes.
On the other hand, an increase in terror threats following the rise of the Islamic State across Syria and Iraq, and military retaliation from the West, has firmly placed counterterrorism and national security back on the policy agenda.
Against this background, both Google and Apple have announced increased encryption as part of their latest smartphone operating systems, Android L and iOS 8.

How the new encryption system works

Over at his blog A Few Thoughts on Cryptographic Engineering, Johns Hopkins University cryptographer and research professor Matthew Green provides a good technical rundown of how Apple’s cryptography system works:
[Apple’s] approach is to add a 256-bit device-unique secret key called a UID to the mix, and to store that key in hardware where it's hard to extract from the phone. Apple claims that it does not record these keys nor can it access them. On recent devices (with A7 chips), this key and the mixing process are protected within a cryptographic co-processor called the Secure Enclave.
One wrinkle in this story is that allegedly Apple has been helping law enforcement agencies unlock iPhones for a while. This is probably why so many folks are baffled by the new policy. If Apple could crack a phone last year, why can't they do it today?
But the most likely explanation for this policy is probably the simplest one: Apple was never really 'cracking' anything. Rather, they simply had a custom boot image that allowed them to bypass the 'passcode lock' screen on a phone. This would be purely a UI hack and it wouldn't grant Apple access to any of the passcode-encrypted data on the device. However, since earlier versions of iOS didn't encrypt all of the phone's interesting data using the passcode, the unencrypted data would be accessible upon boot.
Does encryption encourage people to go “beyond the law”?
The news has bought criticism from the law enforcement and defence communities, including Cyrus R. Vance Jr. in an article in the Washington Post.
Vance Jr. is the son of Cyrus Vance, who served as secretary of the army under both John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, and later as secretary of state under President Jimmy Carter. He argues the move will make it more difficult for law enforcement and intelligence agencies to gather information from smartphones:
While these manoeuvres may be a welcome change for those who seek greater privacy controls, the unintended victors will ultimately be criminals, who are now free to hide evidence on their phones despite valid warrants to search them.
On the losing end are the victims of crimes — from sexual assault to money laundering to robbery, kidnapping and homicide — many of whom undoubtedly are these companies’ own loyal customers.
As Craig Timberg and Greg Miller report in a separate Washington Post article, the comments echo those of FBI Director James B. Comey:
“There will come a day when it will matter a great deal to the lives of people . . . that we will be able to gain access” to such devices, Comey told reporters in a briefing. “I want to have that conversation [with companies responsible] before that day comes.”
“Beyond the law” goes both ways
Obviously, not everyone agrees with the views put forward by Vance Jr. and Director Comey, including Trevor Timm at The Guardian:
Predictably, the US government and police officials are in the midst of a misleading PR offensive to try to scare Americans into believing encrypted cellphones are somehow a bad thing, rather than a huge victory for everyone’s privacy and security in a post-Snowden era. Leading the charge is FBI director James Comey, who spoke to reporters late last week about the supposed “dangers” of giving iPhone and Android users more control over their phones.
This might be a good time to point out that Congress has not changed surveillance law at all in the nearly 16 months since Edward Snowden’s disclosures began, mostly because of the vociferous opposition from intelligence agencies and cops. The pendulum is still permanently lodged squarely on law enforcement’s side. If it has swung at all, it’s because of the aforementioned ruling by the supreme court of the United States, along with tech companies implementing more privacy protections unilaterally because US tech companies are losing billions of dollars because of the government’s spying scandals.

Did law enforcement bring Apple’s and Google’s encryption efforts on themselves?

A similar argument was made by Zack Whittaker at ZDNet, who says the intelligence and law enforcement community bought the tech industry’s current lack of faith upon themselves.
In response, Whittaker says it is entirely reasonable for the tech giants to take actions within the law that will protect their consumers’ privacy and their business interests:
"Beyond the law" goes both ways. The U.S. government, over multiple administrations, has demonstrated this with the help of Edward Snowden's disclosures. The way that law enforcement and federal agencies have acted thus far, by using terrorism and child abduction as a way to win the hearts and minds away from the NSA surveillance scandal, is in itself heartbreaking.
Now is the time to restore faith in the technology industry — one caused by a disproportionate and overzealous White House over the past fifteen-or-so years. But a happy compromise, at least in my eyes, cannot be reached any time soon. Silicon Valley has lost its trust in the U.S. government, and so their response is reactionary, albeit still well thought-out.
Why women leave the tech industry
On a different topic, Forbes published a survey of 716 women who left careers in the IT industry. It found that women who enjoy the work are choosing to leave because they are unhappy with their work environment. Discriminatory workplaces and poor maternity leave policies were key factors:
One-hundred-ninety-two women cited discomfort working in environments that felt overtly or implicitly discriminatory as a primary factor in their decision to leave tech. That’s just over a quarter of the women surveyed. Several of them mention discrimination related to their age, race, or sexuality in addition to gender and motherhood… Of the 716 women surveyed, 465 are not working today. Two-hundred-fifty-one are employed in non-tech jobs, and 45 of those are running their own companies. A whopping 625 women say they have no plans to return to tech. Only 22—that’s 3%—say they would definitely like to.

The vigilante responsible for Facebook’s real name crackdown against transgender users

Finally, Facebook has recently been in hot water for a crackdown, for which it has since apologised, against hundreds of transgender people who do not use their real names on their accounts.
Daily Dot has the story of how the whole incident was caused by a single user who reported hundreds of accounts on the grounds they failed to meet the social network’s real names policy:
When Facebook issued an apology this week for suspending user accounts that had what it alleged to be fake names, it pinned the whole debacle on one person. This "individual," Facebook reasoned, sewed confusion into its flawed reporting system—intended to protect against bullying and online abuse. Facebook Chief Product Officer Chris Cox explains that Facebook was caught “off guard” by a lone actor who reported “several hundred” accounts as fake. According to our source, who claims to have spent "hours and hours" systematically reporting Facebook users from the drag community and beyond, thousands of accounts were suspended—and they've been at it for weeks.
